LABOR WILL BOOST CHILD & MATERNAL HEALTH SERVICES IN BAYSIDE

A Shorten Labor Government will boost health services for families in Brisbane’s east by building a dedicated child and youth health centre and expanding services at Gundu Pa.

Labor’s $29.2 million investment will ensure this community has affordable access to quality children’s health services close to home, helping kids from conception to adolescence.

”This is a wonderful announcement for the bayside community, as a parent I know that having access to healthcare close to home provides such peace of mind and will make a difference for many families across the bayside,” Ms Briskey said.

The Liberal National Party slashed health services in this area under Campbell Newman, closing the Moreton Bay Nursing Care Unit and cutting the 24 hour primary care service at Wynnum Hospital.

It was the Palaszczuk Labor Government that restored health services to the region when it opened the state-of-the-art Gundu Pa community health centre in 2017.

Gundu Pa already offers a range of services to the local community, including specialist outpatient appointments, oral health services, chronic disease management, BreastScreen and rehabilitation.

Federal Labor’s investment will expand on these services for the region’s 11,000 families.

We will invest $26.2 million to establish a stand-alone Child and Youth Health Centre at Wynnum Manly – near Gundu Pa – so young people and their families can get the health services they need.

This integrated health facility is expected to offer services such as child development, child and youth mental health, paediatric outpatient clinics and indigenous maternal and child health services.

Labor will also spend $3 million to upgrade Gundu Pa so it has ultrasound capabilities.

Currently, women can access a range of obstetricand gynaecology services at Gundu Pa but have to travel back to Redland Hospital for a fully publicly-funded ultrasound.

This investment will ensure that no longer has to happen.

These are the kinds of investments Labor governments make to ensure every Australian can access top-quality and affordable health care, no matter where they live.

The Liberal National Party on the other hand just cut and cut and cut from health.

Just last week, Scott Morrison used his Federal Budget to lock in the public hospitals cuts that he introduced as Treasurer.

Like Campbell Newman before him, Scott Morrison is completely out of touch and just doesn’t seem to understand that Australians care about their health services.

Bill Shorten and Labor will deliver a fair go for Australia by reversing these cuts and making massive new health investments with our $2.8 billion Better Hospitals Fund – including this investment for Wynnum-Manly area.

Only Labor can be trusted to fix our hospitals and strengthen Medicare.

If elected to Government, Labor will provide $800,000 to the AC Carina Football Club to construct an additional soccer pitch and proper facilities for their growing number of female players.

“I’m delighted a Shorten Labor Government will support this great local club,” Labor candidate for Bonner Jo Briskey said.

LABOR’S FAIR GO FOR SPORTING WOMEN AND GIRLS

A Shorten Labor Government will support local Carina sport club to support increased female participation and give women and girls a fair go in sport.

If elected to Government, Labor will provide $800,000 to the AC Carina Football Club to construct an additional soccer pitch and proper facilities for their growing number of female players.

AC Carina celebrates its 40th anniversary this season and since 2014 has fielded a growing number of women’s teams.

The facilities have not been able to keep pace with the surge in popularity for women’s soccer driven by the W-League, Matildas and players like Sam Kerr.

“I’m delighted a Shorten Labor Government will support this great local club,” Labor candidate for Bonner Jo Briskey said.

“This funding will ensure all players have access to the facilities they need, from kids who just want to play sport right through to players looking to take the step up into high performance pathways.”

Labor is committed to supporting communities improve local sporting facilities to give all Australians a fair go at sport, whether they dream of being the next Sam Kerr and one day representing Australia, or just want to play for their local club and be active.

Our investments in local sporting clubs like AC Carina will help communities build capacity to meet growing number of women and girls playing team sports.

This commitment delivers on Labor’s goals of making women welcome in sporting clubs and supporting a fair go for women and girls who want to play sport.

Labor’s Jo Briskey kicks off campaign to win Bonner

The Labor campaign for Bonner was given a major boost on Saturday night with a high energy campaign kick-off hosted at the Carina leagues club.

Labor has endorsed national parent advocate Jo Briskey to contest the marginal seat of Bonner at the next election.

The Labor campaign for Bonner was given a major boost on Saturday night with a high energy campaign kick-off hosted at the Carina leagues club.

Labor has endorsed national parent advocate Jo Briskey to contest the marginal seat of Bonner at the next election.

National union president, now Labor’s new member for the Victorian seat of Batman, Ged Kearney came up to help Jo kick start her campaign.

The two were joined by over 100 local supporters with both Jo and Ged receiving a rousing reception from the gathered crowd.

“I’ve worked alongside Jo, I’ve seen how much she cares and how hard she works to make sure Australian mums and dads get a better deal from government, she is exactly who the families of Bonner need as their voice down in Canberra” Ged Kearney told the crowd.

Ms Briskey reflected on her advocacy work as the head of Australia’s peak body for parents, The Parenthood, and shared with the crowd how much the Turnbull government was costing local families in cuts to healthcare, reducing funding going into local classrooms and a failure to properly address the rising cost of childcare.

“I have seen how Turnbull and his government have grown further and further out of touch with the issues that really matter to parents and families, Bonner families deserve better.” Ms Briskey said.

“Thanks to the LNP our local schools - public and catholic hardest hit - have missed out on funding that would have help them to reduce class sizes and employ specialist teachers. All in favour of a massive tax hand out for large multinationals,”

“There is a lot at stake this election. There are a lot people who are depending on us to deliver them a better government, a Labor government.”

Ms Briskey ended the night with a call to action to the room full of activists and supporters, putting the current LNP member on notice.

“Our fight starts now. We will go neighbourhood to neighbourhood, street to street, door to door, and have the thousands of individual conversations we need to have with the voters across Bonner to earn their support, their trust and their vote.”

 END.
